Liverpool have finalized the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan agreement. The 27-year-old, who was named captain of the Spanish club in January, passed a medical examination on Merseyside on Monday. He is expected to begin training with his new teammates later this week and is available for selection immediately.
The deal sees Liverpool cover the player's salary for the duration of his stay at Anfield, though the club will not pay a loan fee. Araujo demonstrated his commitment to the move by accepting a pay cut to facilitate the transfer. Barcelona sanctioned the move after the defender fell out of favor during Hansi Flick’s LaLiga-winning campaign last season.
This acquisition provides a significant boost to Liverpool’s defensive depth, which has been hampered by recent injuries. Beyond his primary role as a central defender, Araujo’s ability to play at right-back means Liverpool are unlikely to pursue a new full-back to replace the injured Conor Bradley. The club views Araujo as a key leadership figure, especially following the departure of senior players Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah. He fills the void left by Ibrahima Konate, who joined Real Madrid following the expiration of his contract.
While Liverpool remains confident in their long-term defensive prospects through young talents like Jacquet, Leoni, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, and Mor Ndiaye, the immediate need for reinforcement prompted this move. Araujo is the second signing of the summer for the club under Iraola, following Victor Munoz, as the team continues to prioritize the search for a new winger to replace Salah.
