Yamal, who turned 17 just days before the Euro 2024 final, faces his 19th birthday on the eve of this upcoming semi-final. After appearing as a substitute in Spain's opening 0-0 draw against Cape Verde, he started against Saudi Arabia, scoring once before being substituted at half-time in a 4-0 win. Spain captain Rodri has encouraged the youngster to manage his anxiety, noting that while Yamal's maturity is remarkable, the team has missed the verticality he provided during the European Championship.
On the other side, 27-year-old Kylian Mbappe is chasing history. With eight goals in the current tournament, he is tied with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race and sits just one behind the Argentine's all-time record of 21 World Cup goals. Having won the title in 2018 and recorded a hat-trick in the 2022 final, Mbappe is aiming for a third consecutive final appearance, a feat last achieved by Brazil's Cafu. Despite facing criticism regarding his commitment to Real Madrid while nursing injuries earlier this year, Mbappe remains focused on his objective. "I know people talk about the stats. I watch the TV too. But my only focus is on helping the team and getting us back here on July 19," he said after beating Sweden in the last 32 at the MetLife Stadium, the venue for the final. "I have won a World Cup and been a runner-up. This team has done neither of those things, but it is the team with the greatest potential," he added after defeating Morocco in the quarter-finals.
While Mbappe holds the advantage in experience and international accolades, their head-to-head record favors the Spaniard. In 10 matches across club and country competition over the last two years, Mbappe has suffered eight defeats against Yamal. "Given he was able to show that level of maturity at that European Championship, when he is two years older you are not so impressed by what he is able to do," he added.
