Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has publicly criticized the national team's management, specifically pointing to head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, following a disappointing 0-4 T20I series defeat against England. India has struggled recently, coming off back-to-back series losses against Ireland and England, with results of 0-2 and 0-4 respectively.
Karthik highlighted the inconsistent handling of Sanju Samson and 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi as a primary failure in communication. Samson, who earned Player of the Tournament honors during the 2026 T20 World Cup, was dropped after three matches against England, making way for Suryavanshi. However, after failing to find his footing in three appearances, Suryavanshi was subsequently dropped for the fifth and final T20I, with Samson returning to the side. Over the series, Samson accumulated 28 runs, while Suryavanshi managed 42 runs across his three games.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Karthik suggested that the management is suffering from a disconnect. He noted that while Agarkar appears focused on grooming future talent, Gambhir is under intense pressure to secure wins in bilateral series to protect his own reputation. According to Karthik, this creates a situation of conflict and friction regarding the strategic direction of the team. He further argued that if the management was committed to developing Suryavanshi, the series against Ireland would have been the appropriate time to integrate him.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain echoed concerns regarding the management's impact on player confidence. Hussain claimed that the think tank was driven by public pressure to include the young Suryavanshi, who had impressed with 776 runs at a strike rate exceeding 237 during the 2026 IPL. Hussain argued that by dropping the World Cup Player of the Tournament to accommodate the youngster, and then benching the teenager shortly after, the management has left both players doubting their own capabilities.
