The German Football Association (DFB) has taken a significant step toward appointing Jurgen Klopp as the new coach of the national team. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke met with the 59-year-old in New York on Friday to discuss his potential return to management.
According to a DFB press release, the parties engaged in a constructive discussion and reached an understanding regarding the key points of a prospective contract. While both sides expressed confidence that negotiations could be brought to a successful conclusion, the DFB acknowledged that the appointment remains subject to a formal agreement with Klopp's current employer, the Red Bull Group.
Further discussions are expected to take place next week. Klopp has been the primary candidate for the DFB to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany's exit in the round-of-32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay.
Widely regarded as one of the elite coaches in football, Klopp is celebrated for his successful tenures at Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund. Since departing Liverpool in 2024, he has served as the head of global football for Red Bull, overseeing a vast network of clubs across Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States, and Japan. Despite his current role, Klopp noted last weekend that he feels "more than recharged" following his time away from the frontlines of football management.
