Jasprit Bumrah has been officially ruled out of India's upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The 32-year-old pacer was unable to recover in time from a knee injury that he sustained during the second ODI against England last month.
The bowler had previously been included in the squad for the Sri Lanka series, though his participation was contingent upon clearing a fitness assessment at the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. It is understood that Bumrah, who also missed the Lord's ODI due to an impact injury sustained while fielding, continued to experience physical discomfort throughout his rehabilitation process, leading to his withdrawal from the team.
This absence represents a significant setback for the Indian Test side, which is currently in a transition period. The team has faced challenges recently, having lost two home Test series over the past two years alongside mixed results in overseas conditions.
The BCCI has been managing the workload of the world's top-ranked Test bowler closely since he suffered a back injury during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. As part of this ongoing management strategy, Bumrah featured in only three of the five Tests in England last year and was rested for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June, which followed the IPL 2026 season.
