A political billboard promoting an Israeli election campaign has triggered significant backlash in Greek-administered Southern Cyprus, prompting a debate regarding the appropriateness of foreign political activity on the island. The advertisement prominently features Gadi Eisenkot, the chairman of the Yashar! party and a former top Israeli military chief. It was strategically positioned along the motorway leading to Larnaca International Airport, a transit corridor utilized by approximately 75 percent of Israeli citizens arriving in or residing on the island.
The presence of the campaign material has drawn sharp criticism from local political figures, including Fidias Panayiotou, a Member of the European Parliament for the Greek administration. In a statement posted on X, Panayiotou denounced the billboard, stating, “This is simply not right,” and urged for the defense of the country’s sovereignty.
Observers note that the selection of this location is likely intentional, given the growing geopolitical significance of the Eastern Mediterranean. Since the onset of Israel's war in Gaza in October 2023, the southern part of Cyprus has functioned as a transit hub and a safe haven for Israelis, with more than 16,000 individuals arriving on the island in the following three years. Israel currently serves as one of the largest inbound tourism markets for the region, with roughly 600,000 Israeli visitors recorded annually.
Beyond tourism, the island has seen a surge in Israeli real estate acquisitions, a trend described by some Greek Cypriots as a "silent occupation" or "land grab." These activities have fueled widespread concerns regarding the potential impact on local demographics, the republic’s sovereignty, and regional stability. Statistical data indicates that between 2021 and early 2025, Israeli citizens acquired approximately 4,000 properties in the Greek-administered part of the island, bringing the total number of Israeli-owned residences in the area to 15,000.
