Iran's parliament is scheduled to convene for a virtual session this Sunday to deliberate on two significant legislative proposals. According to reports from the state-run broadcaster IRIB, lawmakers intend to review a bill aimed at countering foreign influence while simultaneously examining measures for overseeing the Strait of Hormuz.
As part of the upcoming proceedings, members of the National Security Committee are set to evaluate a “Smart Management Plan” specifically designed for the strategic waterway. In addition to these oversight measures, parliamentarians will review a separate bill focused on combating international criminal activities.
The legislative activity follows recent diplomatic developments regarding the Strait of Hormuz. On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei announced that Iran and Oman had successfully reached an agreement on a shipping route map for the strait, concluding several weeks of technical negotiations. These discussions were conducted under the framework of an Iran-US memorandum of understanding, which tasked Tehran and Muscat with establishing a new navigation structure for the area.
Despite the progress in technical talks between Iran and Oman, Tehran maintains that any formal decision to reopen the strategic waterway remains dependent on the United States fulfilling its specific obligations outlined in the memorandum.
