The 2027 ODI World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, will feature a 14-team field and a revamped tournament structure. Following the ICC’s annual general meeting held in Edinburgh over the weekend, officials announced on Wednesday that a new 'Super Series' round will be implemented prior to the group stages. This initial phase is designed to eliminate two teams from the competition.
Following the Super Series, the remaining 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six for the subsequent round. According to the governing body, this format was adopted to enhance the consequence of matches during the early stages of the tournament. Additionally, the ICC confirmed the introduction of a 'Super Sevens' stage scheduled to take place after the group rounds. This stage will feature the top three finishers from each group, along with the next best-placed team across both groups.
