England captain Harry Kane has officially confirmed reports that he played a round of golf with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking at a press conference in Miami on Friday, July 10, ahead of England’s World Cup quarterfinal match against Norway, Kane revealed the outing took place approximately 18 months ago.
The meeting occurred after Trump invited the striker to play while Kane was visiting Palm Beach, Florida, with the game likely hosted at Trump’s International Golf Club. Reflecting on the experience, Kane described it as surreal and expressed gratitude for the invitation. He noted that Trump’s golf game was quite impressive, adding that he hopes to maintain a similar level of skill when he reaches the former president’s age.
The confirmation follows comments made by Trump earlier in the week, in which he praised Kane as a great player and a good golfer. The former president stated, “I played golf with him and I like him a lot.”
Kane, who has scored six goals in the current World Cup tournament, is preparing to lead England against Norway at Hard Rock Stadium this Saturday. The context of the tournament has also seen diplomatic interactions involving the former president, as Trump previously reached out to FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding a one-game suspension handed to U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. Although Infantino maintained the call did not influence the outcome, Balogun’s penalty was eventually reduced to a suspended sentence, allowing him to participate in the round of 16 against Belgium. Despite that adjustment, the U.S. team was eliminated from the competition following a 4-1 loss on Monday, July 6.
