Washington Freedom climbed to the second position in the points table following a decisive five-wicket win against MI New York. The outcome leaves Freedom awaiting the result of the TSK versus LAKR match to determine if they can solidify their standing and secure two opportunities to reach the final. Despite a standout performance from MI New York captain Nicholas Pooran, who struck a belligerent 86 off 44 balls featuring eight sixes, the target of 188 proved insufficient.
MI New York struggled early after being asked to bat, losing Quinton de Kock in the second over to a Saurabh Netravalkar delivery. Monak Patel added a few boundaries before falling to Glenn Maxwell, leaving the team at 31 for 2 by the fifth over. Pooran anchored the innings, reaching a 31-ball fifty and sharing a 90-run third-wicket partnership with Kunwarjeet Singh. Following Kunwarjeet's dismissal for 26 by Ian Holland, Pooran continued his aggressive play, helping his side reach 150 runs by the 15th over. However, his departure via lbw to Netravalkar triggered a collapse, as MI New York lost five wickets for 37 runs to finish at 187 for 8.
The chase began shakily for Washington Freedom, with opener Mitchell Owen falling to Shakib Al Hasan and Steven Smith dismissed by Trent Boult. After managing only 29 runs in the first five overs, Andries Gous and Rachin Ravindra accelerated the scoring. The duo put on a 116-run stand in less than 12 overs, effectively dismantling the MI New York bowling attack. Ravindra reached his fifty in 26 balls, while Gous brought up his own half-century in 38 balls.
Although Ravindra fell to Rushil Ugarkar, Gous remained aggressive, hitting two fours and two sixes in a single over from Romario Shepherd. Gous was eventually dismissed for 96 off 54 balls, just four runs shy of a century. Glenn Maxwell then stepped in to complete the chase, leading Washington Freedom to victory in 18.3 overs.
However, he was out lbw to Netravalkar and this led to a flurry of wickets as MINY lost five wickets for 37 runs to finish just short of 190.
Both batters cleared the ropes with regular frequency after that, taking their side to 83 for 2 after 10 overs.
