Wildfires are currently tearing through France and Spain, forcing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes. The situation follows a sweltering summer of heatwaves across Europe, where temperatures have frequently soared above 40C (104F).
France is currently enduring its worst fire season in two decades, while officials in the Spanish capital of Madrid have described the blazes in their region as the worst in recorded history.
In the regions surrounding Madrid, authorities estimate that approximately 297 square miles (770 sq km) have been burned, an area larger than the city of Madrid itself. Meanwhile, in France, the Gironde region near the city of Bordeaux has been hit particularly hard. More than 200,000 people have been forced from their homes in this area.
The blaze has spread with alarming speed, consuming more than 162 square miles (420 sq km) in less than four days—an area roughly four times the size of Paris. The fire is currently situated just nine miles (15km) from the southern outskirts of Bordeaux.
The fires in Gironde have also posed a significant threat to sensitive military and industrial sites, including facilities that work on rocket motors, French ballistic missiles, and the processing of hazardous chemicals. Satellite imagery of the region shows vast areas of scorched, blackened earth, with smoke drifting inland toward the east.
The intensity of the heat has caused the fires to become so extreme that they have created their own giant fire-generated thunderstorms. This rare weather event occurs when heat from the wildfires causes air, smoke, ash, and water vapor to rise rapidly into the atmosphere.
As the air cools, the water vapor condenses into a cloud, which can grow into a cumulonimbus—the same type of cloud associated with thunderstorms. If these clouds become large enough, they can produce their own lightning, potentially starting new fires, and occasionally bring hail and rain, making the conditions unpredictable and difficult to control.
To combat the crisis, French authorities have deployed approximately 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, and 1,200 police officers and gendarmes. Despite this massive mobilization, Gironde official Jean Luc Gleyze stated that authorities lack sufficient resources. He noted that they do not have enough people or trucks, and expressed doubt that France as a whole has enough to combat the scale of the fires.
French firefighters are utilizing planes loaded with fire retardant, as well as Canadair aircraft, which can scoop 6,000 litres of water from the sea or lakes in just 12 seconds to drop directly on the flames.
On high-risk days, loaded aircraft patrol areas before fires are even reported to ensure a rapid response. Other equipment, such as the Air Tractor AT-802F Fire Boss, has been used in both Spain and France, while a French Air Force A400M transport aircraft was deployed to drop retardant near Lacanau.
Around the town of Lacanau, crews have used bulldozers, diggers, and mechanical shovels to carve firebreaks up to 100m (328ft) wide, stripping vegetation to remove fuel and stop the fire's spread.
Spanish teams are employing similar suppression techniques as they face what is on course to be the country's worst fire season in two decades. Government delegate Francisco Martin confirmed the severity of the situation, describing the blazes as the largest in the history of the Madrid region.
Experts note that these fires have been aided by hotter, drier conditions caused by climate change, which allow them to spread faster and burn with greater intensity.
Many on the ground in both countries remain fearful that the coming week could see worsening conditions, as high pressure is forecast to bring dry, settled, and increasingly hot temperatures to the region.
