The British government has confirmed that England fans will be able to remain in pubs to watch the full duration of the World Cup quarter-final against Norway, even if the match faces delays due to extreme weather. Under the new measures, venues across England and Wales are permitted to stay open until 30 minutes after the final whistle, ensuring supporters can celebrate or commiserate regardless of any potential scheduling shifts.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 22:00 BST (18:00 local time) at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. The government’s decision follows a chaotic situation during the 2 July match against Mexico, where heavy rain and lightning at the Azteca Stadium caused an hour-long delay. Policing Minister Sarah Jones stated that the extension guarantees fans and venues complete certainty, adding, “England fans deserve the chance to watch every minute of the quarter-final together.”
This blanket extension means individual bars and pubs do not need to submit separate applications for extended hours. The Home Office confirmed the policy applies to any further England matches, potentially including the final. Previously, licensing hours were restricted to 01:00 or 02:00 depending on the kick-off time, but the Home Secretary has utilized legislative powers to grant an exception for this event of significant national interest.
The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, has faced ongoing challenges from high temperatures. BBC lead weather presenter Matt Taylor noted that Miami is currently under a heat advisory, with temperatures reaching 33C (91.4F) and humidity making it feel closer to 43C. While the risk of storms at kick-off is estimated at 20-30%, any lightning within eight miles of the venue would trigger a mandatory 30-minute delay.
Fifa has implemented mandatory hydration breaks to protect players, who are also monitored via the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index. Although the players’ union, Fifpro, suggests that a WBGT above 28C should prompt delays, the current forecast for Miami sits at 27C, and there is no indication the match will be postponed. Minister Jones expressed hope that venues will be packed as the team looks to move closer to “bringing football home.”
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the city from 11:00 to 19:00 local time.
