The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has unveiled a comprehensive policy roadmap that proposes a radical restructuring of the United States government. Released on July 14, the platform envisions an American social democracy where citizens are freed from debt, health insurance requirements, and housing costs, asserting that comfortable housing is a fundamental human right.
This policy vision has triggered significant backlash from conservative figures. House Speaker Mike Johnson characterized the proposals as "communism" driven by "barbarians." In a post on social media, Johnson wrote, "This isn’t just Common Sense vs. Crazy anymore. It’s Common Sense vs. COMMUNISM," specifically condemning suggestions to eliminate the U.S. Senate and have the president selected by Congress.
The DSA, which boasts 120,000 members, includes prominent political figures such as New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib. Additionally, several current Democratic nominees for the U.S. House, including Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez in New York and Melat Kiros in Colorado, are affiliated with the group. Recent polling indicates that one-third of Democrats identify as democratic socialists, while 47% of Americans do not understand the policies associated with the movement.
The platform is organized into three primary sections. The "Working-Class Democracy" section advocates for expanding voting rights to include all permanent residents, restoring voting rights to individuals with criminal convictions, and granting statehood to Washington, D.C., alongside self-determination for territories like Puerto Rico and Guam. It also proposes structural changes that would likely necessitate amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Regarding the economy, the organization calls for making large corporations public, implementing aggressive wealth taxes, and strengthening worker unionization efforts.
A second section, "Working Class Foreign Policy," outlines a shift in U.S. global engagement. The platform calls for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), ending all deportations and detentions, and providing a path to citizenship for all immigrants regardless of status. It also advocates for the "Free Palestine" movement, which includes ending U.S. military aid to Israel and prosecuting U.S. and Israeli leaders for alleged genocide in Gaza. Furthermore, the organization demands an end to economic sanctions and blockades against nations such as Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela.
The most controversial segment, "End the U.S. War Machine," calls for the defunding of the Department of War, the closure of overseas military bases, and the prosecution of U.S. war criminals through the International Criminal Court. While the proposal aims to support veterans, it explicitly calls for defunding the Pentagon. The organization maintains that global populations deserve to live free from U.S. interference.
When asked about support for the specific platform proposals—including the abolition of the Senate and Electoral College, the defunding of the Pentagon, and the replacement of the president and Supreme Court—most of the identified politicians did not respond. Claire Valdez’s campaign office declined to provide a comment. Meanwhile, Representatives Summer Lee and Greg Casar, who were previously endorsed by the organization, no longer identify as members of the DSA.
