Former Barcelona and Brazil right-back Dani Alves has spoken about his time in detention, revealing that he felt happier earning €113 in jail than he did while making millions on the football pitch. Alves spent more than a year in pre-trial detention in Catalonia, Spain, following accusations of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. Although he was initially sentenced to four and a half years in prison, he consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the legal proceedings.
During the case, the court ordered Alves to pay €9,000 in damages to the victim, and he had offered a compensation payment of €150,000. In March 2025, a Spanish court ultimately acquitted the former defender, citing significant inconsistencies and contradictions within the case. Reflecting on his experience while in custody, Alves—who is now a pastor in his native Brazil—told OJogo that his spiritual connection provided him with perspective. He noted that while he was earning millions of euros through his football career, he was often disconnected from that reality, whereas in prison, he found value in his faith and daily tasks like cleaning.
The decorated footballer, who played for elite clubs including Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus, boasts a career spanning over 1,000 cumulative games with 75 goals for club and country. Before, I played football and now I was in prison cleaning the house, but I had my 'father' with me [God]. He earned over 120 caps for the Brazilian national team. His most significant professional success came during an eight-season tenure at Barcelona between 2008 and 2016, followed by a brief second stint in 2021-22. During the 2010-11 season, which is often considered his most prolific, Alves recorded four goals and 21 assists in 54 matches, helping the club secure both the La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles. He was a key member of the Barcelona squads that achieved the continental treble under Pep Guardiola in 2008-09 and Luis Enrique six years later.
