Authorities in Congo have reported that confirmed cases of Ebola have reached 2,011, a figure that includes 754 deaths. According to government data released overnight, the current surge is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record for the nation.
Data provided by Congo’s Ministry of Health indicates that 753 individuals are currently receiving treatment in hospitals or remain in isolation. Meanwhile, 366 people have successfully recovered from the virus. The nation has been grappling with the outbreak, which is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, since May 15.
Despite an expanding medical response, health officials report that the disease continues to spread at a pace that exceeds their ability to track new infections. The World Health Organization noted on Tuesday that at least 80% of new cases are emerging from unknown chains of transmission. Furthermore, contact tracing efforts remain a significant challenge, with current coverage of individuals exposed to the virus reaching only 67%.
