Chelsea have secured the services of Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, with the 35-year-old agreeing to a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Welbeck is set to join manager Xabi Alonso’s squad immediately as they embark on their pre-season tour. The move marks a departure from Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy, which has primarily focused on acquiring younger talent for development or future profit. This signing represents the first time the club has paid a transfer fee for a player over the age of 26 since the 2022 acquisition of then-33-year-old Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Welbeck stated that the interest from Chelsea filled him with immense pride, noting the club’s consistent ambition to win trophies. He added that he felt honoured to join at an exciting time, highlighting his existing connections with some of the players and positive discussions with Alonso. Welbeck emphasized his motivation, saying he has the fire in his belly to give everything for the club and its supporters.
For Alonso, the addition of the veteran forward addresses a need for experience following a challenging 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Welbeck arrives in west London after a productive six-year stint at Brighton, during which he became the club's all-time leading top-flight goalscorer with 51 goals and 18 assists. Brighton chairman Tony Bloom praised Welbeck’s contribution, citing his character, leadership, and performance as vital to the club’s recent history. Last season, the 42-cap England international netted 13 goals in 37 league appearances.
Welbeck’s arrival introduces competition for Chelsea’s attacking options, including Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, and Liam Delap. The club has been active in the transfer market, having recently signed 24-year-old Morgan Rogers for a British record £117 million, defender Maxence Lacroix for £52 million, and 21-year-old Atalanta defender Marco Palestra for £43 million. Chelsea have also been linked to a potential move for 36-year-old Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson.
