Como head coach Cesc Fabregas has issued a frank assessment of his team’s roster situation as they prepare for the Champions League. Despite the club's rapid rise from Serie B just two years ago to a fourth-place finish in Serie A last season, Fabregas warned that strict UEFA squad regulations will likely limit their available options to only 16-17 players.
Explaining the logistical hurdle, Fabregas noted that the club currently lacks a youth academy capable of meeting specific UEFA requirements. He emphasized that building a sustainable squad is a long-term process that cannot be achieved in just two or three years. This issue is compounded by the club's recent history regarding homegrown talent, as the squad featured only one Italian player last season, who saw just one minute of action in Serie A.
To address depth, the club has actively pursued new signings. This includes Italy Under-21 international Mattia Liberali, who joined from Catanzaro after previously being part of the Milan youth academy. Fabregas praised Liberali’s determination and ability to quickly assimilate tactical ideas, confirming he will see playing time as a trequartista or a False 9. Additionally, following the departures of Alberto Moreno and Sergi Roberto, the club secured Kaiki and Luis Milla. Fabregas highlighted Milla as a leader who provides balance and organization, while noting that the team is working with the aggressive Kaiki to refine his play with the ball.
The club is also managing the return of several young talents, including Nico Paz, who was part of the Argentina squad that finished as runners-up at the 2026 World Cup. Along with Assane Diao and Martin Baturina, Paz is currently on an extended break. Fabregas expects Paz to return on August 17, though he remains uncertain if the player will feature against Liverpool. The manager acknowledged that while these players possess significant quality, the growing expectations and pressure are part of their professional development that the club must support. Currently, Como is hosting the Como Cup at the Stadio Sinigaglia, featuring opponents including Crystal Palace, RC Lens, Famalicao, Villarreal, and Al-Ula.
