New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo has drawn sharp criticism following a failed backflip attempt during his entrance at Fanatics Fest. The stunt, which saw the athlete mimicking the entrance of WWE star Triple H, resulted in a messy landing that sparked immediate concern among observers given the running back's recent history of severe physical trauma.
Quincy Avery, a private quarterback coach for Deshaun Watson, publicly condemned the stunt on X, sharing a video of the incident and labeling the player, "What an idiot." The footage shows Skattebo attempting a standing backflip, losing his balance upon landing, and briefly struggling before recovering to celebrate with the crowd.
The incident is particularly sensitive because Skattebo is currently recovering from a major injury sustained during his rookie season. His debut campaign was cut short by an open tibia fracture, a ruptured deltoid ligament, and a dislocated right ankle. Despite the premature end to his season, he managed to record 410 rushing yards, 207 receiving yards on 24 catches, and seven total touchdowns, leading the Giants to rely on him as a key component for their 2026 offensive strategy.
Addressing the backlash, Skattebo stated that he is healthy and explicitly told fans, "I'm gonna address the elephant… I will NOT hurt myself before the season." He explained that the environment at the event contributed to the botched landing, noting that the floor was a padded surface rather than firm ground. "Those floors are bouncy, so when I took off, I was mid-air like, 'I'm not gonna land this, I'm way too high.' It had too much cushion, it wasn't a stiff firm ground… I safely landed, got back up and was good to go. So nothing came out of that, I'm perfectly fine, nothing happened, we are good," he added.
With the Giants, including offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and assistant Greg Roman, planning to build a run-heavy offense around him, Skattebo's physical status remains a significant priority for the franchise.
Hence, Skattebo's health remains one of the franchise's biggest priorities.
