San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has significantly escalated his public dispute with the organization, utilizing Instagram to express his frustrations with the team, his coaches, and his teammates. In a series of posts, the All-Pro receiver alleged that the 49ers initiated a "smear campaign" against him after he expressed a desire to join the Washington Commanders. This tension follows his career trajectory since 2019 and 2020.
Aiyuk recounted that the team attempted to reduce his contract by $30 million, a move he was willing to accept if it meant moving to Washington. He claimed that when he resisted the team's tactics, they threatened to tarnish his name, image, and likeness. Furthermore, Aiyuk appeared to criticize teammate Christian McCaffrey, referencing the star running back's fumble during the opening drive of Super Bowl LVIII. Aiyuk wrote, "People have career years when 11 on the O. Everybody eat NO KIZZY!!! I hold a NFL RECORD for making plays w the least amount of opportunities!!! Im looking for MY opp cuz I'm gone capitalize and win a bowl! I'm not gone fumble it away!! I'm done playing backseat to folks who NOT like that!!!" In that Super Bowl matchup, which the Chiefs won 25-22, McCaffrey fumbled at the 30-yard line on the opening possession.
Regarding his relationship with head coach Kyle Shanahan, Aiyuk claimed that the coach wanted him to return to the roster primarily as a decoy to draw defensive coverage for other players. Aiyuk stated firmly that he would not return to the team, even referencing the viral conspiracy theory about an electrical substation near the training facility contributing to injuries. Aiyuk has not played since suffering a knee injury against the Kansas City Chiefs in October 2024.
While Aiyuk has expressed interest in joining the Commanders due to his connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels—his former Arizona State teammate—and general manager Adam Peters, industry experts are skeptical. Former NFL wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh recently stated on "Speakeasy" (from 1:07:45 in the video below) that there is a zero-percent chance of a move to Washington occurring, suggesting that Aiyuk's recent public comments have effectively ended any such prospects.
