The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally dismissed growing media speculation that the upcoming ODI against England at Lord's this Sunday will serve as Rohit Sharma's final international appearance. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the rumors directly, stating that no such discussions regarding the veteran opener's retirement have taken place.
"There are lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit Sharma's future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord's on Sunday," Saikia said in a statement to the media. While the secretary did not explicitly condemn the ongoing discourse, he reaffirmed that the team management views the opener as an essential component of the Indian squad.
Saikia emphasized that Rohit continues to be a regular member of the national ODI team and will remain available for selection as long as he fits within the team's long-term strategy. He concluded that the Lord's fixture will not mark the end of the player's career.
The clarification follows heightened scrutiny regarding the opener's future, prompted by a lean run of form in the ongoing series against England and India’s strategic focus on the 2027 World Cup. Despite the public uncertainty, it has been previously reported that discussions regarding the player's future had occurred between the selectors, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the opener himself, with Sharma consistently indicating his desire to compete in the next World Cup.
