The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is preparing to transition away from its current across-format captaincy model, with plans to reinstate separate leadership for red-ball and white-ball cricket. Directors are scheduled to address a formal proposal regarding this shift during a board meeting on Wednesday, July 29, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Under the proposed structure, Nazmul Hossain is expected to remain in his role as the Test captain. For the white-ball formats, Litton Das has emerged as the front-runner to lead the ODI side, potentially taking over the responsibilities from Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The board is also considering Towhid Hridoy to serve as Litton's deputy for both T20I and ODI formats. Hridoy has recently gained recognition as a leadership prospect after guiding the team to a 2-1 comeback series victory against Zimbabwe, following an initial loss, and also captaining the side in a series against Australia.
The board previously considered reappointing Nazmul Hossain to the ODI captaincy, a role he had previously held, but ultimately decided against it. Officials expressed that maintaining separate captains would allow Nazmul to focus exclusively on leading the Test squad, while Litton focuses on strategic planning for white-ball cricket. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was originally appointed as the ODI captain on June 12, 2025, succeeding Nazmul. Although his tenure was extended by the BCB in April this year through to the 2027 ODI World Cup, the board has faced concerns over performance, as Bangladesh managed only two wins in 13 away ODIs under his leadership.
This potential move marks a pivot away from the three-captain experiment that resulted in Nazmul leading Tests, Mehidy leading ODIs, and Litton leading T20Is. The board previously operated with two captains after Nazmul stepped down from T20I duties, which led to Litton taking over that format. Historically, the board has utilized various captaincy structures, including a three-captain approach in 2022 when Shakib Al Hasan led the Test side, Tamim Iqbal served as the ODI captain, and Mahmudullah captained the T20I team.
