The Big Bash League (BBL) is set to return to a Christmas Eve match during the 2026-27 season, while the final will be hosted on Australia Day. This marks a return to the January 26 date for the tournament’s conclusion after a two-year hiatus, a day noted for its cultural sensitivities. BBL boss Alistair Dobson stated that the installation of new lights at the Junction Oval provided the necessary infrastructure to host a prime-time game in Melbourne on Christmas Eve. The Melbourne Renegades will be involved in this fixture, which is part of a broader plan to utilize the venue more effectively. There will be six double-headers including two games each on Boxing Day and New Years Day as well as back-to-back double-headers on the final weekend of the home and away season on January 16 and 17.
As the MCG prepares for the Boxing Day Test, the Melbourne Stars are scheduled to play a home game against the Brisbane Heat at the Junction Oval on December 21. Cricket Victoria plans to install temporary grandstands at the venue to boost seating capacity toward 6,000. Additionally, both Melbourne derbies will take place at the MCG next season, with one starting at the earlier time of 6:05 p.m. following the success of last summer's derby which saw 68,000 spectators.
While Cricket Australia has explored the possibility of a Christmas Day match, Dobson confirmed that such plans remain on hold pending approval from the Australian Cricketers' Association and the clubs. Discussions regarding player well-being remain a primary consideration for any potential future Christmas Day scheduling. Regarding the Australia Day final, Dobson noted that the date aligns well with the schedule, as it avoids daylight conflicts with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which runs from January 21 to 25. Cricket Australia intends to consult with its Indigenous advisory group regarding the approach to the January 26 event.
The upcoming season will feature three matches in Canberra, with the Sydney Thunder hosting two games—including one against the Stars—and the Sydney Sixers moving a home match from Coffs Harbour. The Hobart Hurricanes will host a game in Launceston following ground redevelopments, with four other games scheduled in Hobart. Furthermore, there will be no BBL matches on December 13 and 14 to allow the Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades adequate time to return from India following the season opener. The finals are scheduled to begin on January 19, though they will proceed without Australia’s Test players, who are expected to miss most of the season due to a four-Test series against New Zealand running from December 9 until January 8 before the team travels to India ahead of a five-Test tour that starts on January 21.
