Atletico Madrid has officially completed the signing of 27-year-old midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP. The Danish international has committed to the 2020/21 La Liga champions by signing a contract that will keep him at the club until 2031.
In an official statement, the Spanish club lauded the midfielder's physical strength, his aptitude for recovering possession, and his tactical reading of the game. Hjulmand, who has earned 27 caps for Denmark and scored one goal for his country, brings significant experience to the squad.
The midfielder's career path saw him develop in his native Denmark and Austria before moving to Lecce in 2021. During his time in Italy, he notably became the second-youngest player to captain a Serie A side, trailing only Francesco Totti’s record at Roma. Following his tenure in Italy, Hjulmand moved to Sporting, where he spent three seasons in Lisbon, securing two Primeira Liga titles and the Portuguese Cup.
This acquisition is part of an active transfer window for Atletico Madrid. The club has already signed Spanish international left-back Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen and is currently in the process of recruiting forward Lee Kang-in from the European champions, Paris Saint-Germain.
In a statement on their website, Atletico praised the Dane's "physical strength, his ability to win the ball back and his reading of the game".
