He expressed regret for his conduct, stating, "Obviously I’m sorry. Because of my position, I can’t allow a feeling, or what I might receive from the other party, to change my mood and my actions." He added that he intends to apologize to the player in person if given the opportunity, emphasizing that he believes on-pitch disputes should remain on the field.
The coach explained that his initial presence on the pitch was intended to act as a peacemaker. "My intention was to go and separate them, that was my intention, but sometimes things happen and emotions run high, but that’s no excuse," Ayala noted, acknowledging that his role required a higher standard of behavior. He described the post-match atmosphere as a "shame" and noted that the team’s collective behavior did not reflect their true character.
The final, which saw Spain emerge victorious following a 106th-minute goal by Ferran Torres, was marred by several confrontations. Reports indicate that a physical exchange between Nahuel Molina and Rodri served as a catalyst for wider tensions, which involved players such as Leandro Paredes, Eric Garcia, and Gavi, who was thrown to the ground during the scuffle.
FIFA has confirmed it is currently investigating the post-match fighting between the squads. Additionally, the governing body is reviewing the display of a Falkland Islands banner by Argentina players following their semifinal victory over England.
