US President Donald Trump held separate telephone conversations with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, focusing on the ongoing stability in the South Caucasus region. These discussions took place exactly one year after the three leaders met at the White House on August 8, 2025, to sign a joint declaration aimed at ending decades of conflict between the two nations. The two South Caucasus neighbors had previously fought in two major wars in the Karabakh region within Azerbaijan since the late 1980s.
During the call, Prime Minister Pashinyan expressed his gratitude to President Trump for organizing the 2025 Washington Peace Summit and for his personal role in the peace process. According to a statement from the Armenian prime minister’s office, both parties noted with satisfaction that the summit has fostered genuine peace, which is being felt by the citizens of both countries. The leaders also discussed the current status of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) project, reaffirming their determination to begin construction of the project in the near future. The call also covered other issues on the bilateral and international agenda.
President Trump also spoke with President Aliyev, where both leaders expressed satisfaction with the peace and stability maintained in the region over the past year. The Azerbaijani presidency noted that no incidents undermining the peace process have occurred since the signing of the agreement. Both presidents highlighted positive developments in bilateral relations, including the export of Azerbaijani oil products to Armenia, the transit of cargo through Azerbaijan to Armenia, and the launch of trade relations between the two countries. The importance of the TRIPP project in terms of regional connectivity was also emphasized, with the note that work on transport infrastructure in Azerbaijan is nearing completion.
In a letter to President Trump, President Aliyev described the summit as a major turning point for the region. He credited Trump’s determination and resolve for bringing an end to three decades of conflict and laying the foundation for a new era of reconciliation and mutually beneficial partnership between the two peoples. The Azerbaijani president also thanked his US counterpart for hosting the summit and for his contribution to the peace agenda between Baku and Yerevan. For his part, President Trump highly appreciated the role of President Aliyev in the peace process. The 2025 summit had aimed to resolve the long-standing conflict in the Karabakh region, with commitments to cease hostilities, reopen transport routes, and normalize relations.
