A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at a police checkpoint in the Dera Ismail Khan district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, leaving at least 12 people dead and approximately 35 others wounded. Local police chief Safdar Baloch confirmed that the casualties primarily consisted of security personnel and civilian passersby. Among those killed in the initial blast were two women and a child, according to Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for the provincial emergency service.
The explosion caused significant destruction to the sprawling checkpoint facility. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire shortly after the blast occurred. As emergency crews attempted to transport the wounded to a nearby hospital, gunmen opened fire on an ambulance. This secondary attack resulted in the death of one rescue worker and left two others injured.
The Pakistani Taliban, officially known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the assault. The TTP is a distinct militant organization that maintains close ties with the Afghan Taliban, which seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. The attack is part of a broader trend of escalating militant violence in Pakistan, often attributed to the TTP and the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army.
In response, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued condemnations of the violence and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. President Zardari labeled the targeting of civilians and law enforcement as “highly condemnable,” and urged for more aggressive action against the TTP, alleging that the group operates with foreign support. Pakistani authorities have frequently accused the Afghan Taliban government of providing a safe haven for TTP members to launch cross-border attacks, a claim that Kabul consistently denies.
This incident follows significant border tensions, including a clash on Thursday that resulted in the deaths of at least 13 Afghan Taliban fighters following Pakistani strikes on suspected militant hideouts. These recurring hostilities continue to challenge ongoing peace mediation efforts led by China, Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
Dera Ismail Khan, located near the former militant stronghold of South Waziristan, has been a frequent target for insurgent groups. In December 2023, the district saw one of its deadliest attacks when a suicide vehicle bomber struck the main gate of a local police station, killing at least 23 security personnel.
