Birmingham Phoenix, having opted to bat first on a favorable surface, struggled to build momentum and were restricted to 137 for 9. The hosts experimented by promoting Mitchell Owen to open alongside Will Smeed, but the move provided little success as Chris Woakes dismissed Smeed for 5. While Joe Clarke injected energy into the innings—notably taking 20 runs off a Sam Cook set—and Rehan Ahmed contributed a six, the Welsh Fire attack remained disciplined throughout.
Lockie Ferguson led the bowling effort with figures of 2 for 20. His impact was highlighted by a brilliant relay catch from Jordan Cox on the boundary to remove Clarke for 35. Root settled in quickly, and the pair built a steady partnership that kept the team ahead of the required rate. Salt eventually fell for 46, trapped lbw by Mitchell Owen after a review. Root continued to anchor the innings, securing his fourth fifty in the competition with a crisp cut through point. Jordan Cox added an aggressive 20 from 14 balls before being bowled by Mahmood. Root finished the match in style, hitting a reverse-sweep for four to level the scores before steering a single to seal the seven-wicket victory.
