Jasprit Bumrah Cleared for Sri Lanka Tests Amid Management Caution

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been declared fit for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Despite receiving clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, team management is expected to adopt a cautious approach regarding his immediate return to the playing XI.

Bumrah had been sidelined after sustaining an 'impact injury' to his left knee, which forced him to miss the third ODI against England at Lord's. According to a BCCI source, the 32-year-old has successfully recovered from the injury and cleared all fitness tests mandated by the CoE. The source noted that Bumrah remains an integral part of the team's plans and is expected to be available for both matches of the series, which forms part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Reports suggest that while there are no major concerns regarding the knee, the coaching staff is likely to manage his workload carefully. Having completed his body conditioning sessions at the CoE, Bumrah is expected to resume bowling training on Saturday, with his intensity set to be increased gradually. A source tracking the situation explained that the medical team had advised an injection followed by 8-10 days of rest, after which he reported for assessment. The team management will continue to monitor his progress closely in the coming days.

It is currently considered unlikely that Bumrah will join the squad in Mumbai before their scheduled departure for Sri Lanka on August 4. Instead, he may link up with the team in Galle ahead of the first Test, which begins on August 15. The second Test is slated to start on August 23 at the SSC in Colombo. India currently faces a significant challenge in the WTC cycle, needing to win seven of their remaining nine Tests to keep their final qualification hopes alive. The team is already dealing with several injury setbacks, including the unavailability of Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy, and Washington Sundar, who are sidelined with various hamstring and quadriceps issues.
