A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic region west of Naples, on Friday, marking the most significant seismic event since activity began to increase in the area in recent years. According to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the primary tremor was followed by 10 aftershocks.
Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci confirmed that four individuals sustained injuries during the event. The earthquake caused visible damage to various residential buildings and several churches. In response to the situation, the Civil Protection Department activated its crisis unit to oversee emergency assessments.
The impact of the quake was widespread, felt across Naples and its neighboring communities. Many residents were seen fleeing into the streets in the immediate aftermath, while power outages were reported throughout parts of Naples and the surrounding metropolitan area.
Transportation was also disrupted, with authorities suspending rail services on the Cumana and Circumflegrea lines. These routes, which link Naples to communities within the Phlegraean Fields, remain closed while safety inspections are conducted. Local officials have urged the public to maintain calm and strictly adhere to official instructions as the situation develops.
