Southern Brave solidified their position at the top of the table by securing their fourth consecutive victory of the tournament, defeating a struggling Birmingham Phoenix side by 24 runs. The win keeps the Brave undefeated, while the Phoenix remain at the bottom of the standings, still searching for their first victory.
Batting first on the expansive pitch at The Rose Bowl, Southern Brave posted a total of 140 for 3. Lizelle Lee provided an explosive start during the powerplay, scoring 43 off 23 balls and hitting the match's only two sixes. Maia Bouchier contributed a steady 31-ball 45, while Jemimah Rodrigues added late momentum by hitting three fours in the final five balls of the innings.
Reflecting on the performance, Lizelle Lee noted that batting against the new ball was easier as the surface played better before the ball softened. She praised her teammates' ability to finish strongly and highlighted the collective effort of the squad. Lee also commended the bowlers, stating they consistently get the team out of difficult situations, and lauded captain Sophie Molineux for providing a calm presence on the field.
In response, Birmingham Phoenix struggled to maintain their chase despite a solid start from Tammy Beaumont and Davina Perrin, who reached 50 runs in 37 balls. Following the strategic timeout, the Phoenix required 54 runs from 30 balls with Beaumont dismissed for 22. The innings faltered shortly after as Alice Capsey was caught at extra cover off a Lauren Bell delivery. Perrin, who had survived three boundary catch opportunities, eventually miscued a shot off Sarah Glenn to Maia Bouchier at long-on after scoring 52 from 40 balls.
The dismissal of Perrin effectively ended the Phoenix's chances. Sophie Molineux, who took 2 for 24, worked alongside fellow left-arm spinner Tilly Courteen-Coleman to restrict the scoring. Despite a few late boundaries from Ellyse Perry, the Phoenix finished 24 runs short of the target.
Meerkat Match Hero Lizelle Lee said: "I think it was better to bat against the new ball out there. It came off the wicket a bit easier and as soon as the ball got a bit softer, it became harder to play. So I think our batters did really well at the end there to get us up to a good score, and I think that's what set us apart.
"Our bowlers are not getting enough credit. They've bowled extremely well, they get us out of everything. Everyone's gelling pretty well and we seem to be able to get over the line in tough situations. Sophie Molineux as captain is such a calm presence on the field and I feel that is flowing into everybody, and it shows."
