Europe's droughts are increasingly being driven by scorching heat rather than a simple lack of rainfall, with soil moisture disappearing far faster than it would in a world without climate change. The agricultural and economic impacts of this shift are already severe. France is currently heading toward its worst maize harvest in 50 years, while Romania has lost more than one million hectares of crops. Across the continent, rivers have run so low that key shipping lanes are disrupted and energy production is under significant strain.
According to a study by World Weather Attribution (WWA), an international collaboration of climate scientists, record-breaking summer heat is supercharging drought across Europe by evaporating water out of the soil faster than it can be naturally replenished. Scientists from 12 European countries analyzed rainfall trends, agricultural soil moisture, and "potential evapotranspiration"—a metric that measures the atmosphere's ability to evaporate moisture—to determine the exact role of climate change in recent droughts. They concluded that while long-term rainfall trends vary across the continent, extreme heat is transforming ordinary dry spells into severe crises.
The researchers found that agricultural soil droughts in Western Europe are now five times more likely due to climate change. In Eastern Europe, where dry conditions have dragged on for six months, such droughts are now 11 times more likely. While climate change was not identified as the primary driver of the lack of rain itself in Western Europe, it is making once-rare heatwaves far more common, dramatically increasing the atmosphere's thirst. Consequently, a low amount of rainfall that once would have caused only a mild, manageable dry spell now tips into a serious drought because the additional heat pulls moisture from the ground much faster. In Western Europe, heatwaves capable of driving these intense evaporative conditions are now about 80 times more likely to occur than in a pre-industrial climate, while in Eastern Europe they are around 40 times more likely.
Dr. Sarah Kew, a climate scientist at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), explained that Europe's climate is shifting rapidly. She noted that while rain patterns remain mixed, findings show that extreme heat is taking over as the primary driver of drought on the continent, evaporating water supplies out of soils and rivers faster than would happen without climate change. Dr. Dominik Schumacher, from the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich, added that this represents a fundamental shift in how European droughts form. He pointed out that despite more wintertime rainfall across most of Europe, there is now an enhanced tendency for unusual soil drying in the spring, before summer even begins. As temperatures climb, the atmosphere's thirst increases quickly, sucking moisture out of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil, preventing rain from staying in the ground.
The consequences of these changes extend far beyond agricultural fields, threatening to push up the prices of essential household items. Merel Laauwen of Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands warned that this is a crisis trickling down to Europe's most vulnerable populations. Crop losses, low river levels, and water use restrictions threaten to drive up the cost of food and energy, hitting low-income households the hardest. Laauwen also noted that despite scientific warnings of more frequent and intense droughts, drought management plans are still not mandated by the European Union, leading to inconsistent preparedness across different countries.
If planet-heating emissions are not urgently reduced, drought conditions could rapidly worsen. Dr. Mariam Zachariah of the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London pointed out that these severe conditions are already occurring at just 1.4°C of global warming. She warned that if global emissions push temperatures up to the predicted 2.8°C, these intense evaporative conditions could double in likelihood, making scorching, dry summers a yearly occurrence in Europe.
Simon Stiell, executive secretary of UN Climate Change, described Europe's worsening droughts as an unignorable red alert that the planet is overheating. He warned that until humanity stops burning massive amounts of coal, oil, and gas, these brutal climate-driven droughts will only become more severe and costly for households and entire economies. However, Stiell emphasized that the solutions are clear: nations must move faster toward renewable energy, which is now cheaper than polluting fossil fuels, electrify their economies, and invest in resilience to protect communities, businesses, and economies.
