The Inter Milan striker, who served as an unused substitute during the 1-0 loss, took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the outcome. While acknowledging the team's effort to secure a second consecutive world title, he admitted his desire to have contributed directly to the match, noting, "I would’ve liked to have tried to help the team on the field, but never mind."
The match saw Argentina struggle offensively, failing to record a single shot on target until deep into extra time. Coach Lionel Scaloni’s decision to leave the forward on the bench for the duration of the final drew significant criticism from the Argentine media, particularly after the final substitution was used to bring on defender Marco Senesi. This tactical choice marked a departure from the tournament's earlier stages, as Martinez had started the first four matches before losing his place to Julian Alvarez.
Despite the disappointment, the striker expressed gratitude toward the fans who supported the team throughout the journey, stating he is "so very proud to be ARGENTINE." Martinez, who is the reigning Capocannoniere of Serie A, played a vital role in Argentina's path to the final, scoring three goals in seven matches.
