The recent World Cup Final, contested last night in New Jersey between Argentina and Spain to decide the winners of the 2026 edition, concluded without a single Serie A player taking to the field. This marked a significant historical occurrence, as it had not happened in 50 years.
Another player, Nico Gonzalez, who was owned by Italian club Juventus, was in Argentina's starting XI. However, he spent the entire 2025-26 campaign playing on loan for Atletico Madrid and was registered with the Spanish club for the tournament, thus not qualifying as a Serie A player on the pitch.
The last time a World Cup Final saw no Serie A players on the field was in 1978, when Argentina defeated West Germany to claim the trophy.
As Lautaro Martinez and Nico Paz did not take to the field, there were no Serie A players in the World Cup Final, something that hadn’t happened for 50 years.
With that in mind, the only Serie A players in the squad were Inter captain Lautaro Martinez and Como starlet Nico Paz, who both remained on the bench throughout.
