Aston Villa has officially secured the signing of Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers, bolstering their midfield options as part of a major squad overhaul. The 25-year-old Brazilian international, who has earned 10 caps for his country, was also a target for Atletico Madrid but ultimately opted for a move to Villa Park.
Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and went on to make 130 appearances for the club. Despite his contributions, he was unable to prevent the side from suffering relegation from the Premier League last season. His transfer comes as Villa looks to reshape its roster following the departure of England midfielder Morgan Rogers, who recently agreed to join Chelsea.
The club has been active in the transfer market throughout July. Earlier this month, Aston Villa sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United. These changes come at a challenging time for the Europa League winners, as they are currently managing the long-term absence of Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana, who is expected to be sidelined until next year following a serious knee injury sustained at the World Cup.
In addition to securing Gomes, manager Unai Emery continues to invest heavily in the squad. On Friday, the club completed the signing of Swiss winger Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth £50 million, establishing a new record transfer fee for Aston Villa.
