Throughout the match, the president was seated in a suite behind thick glass, accompanied by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as well as various administration officials and family members.
The tournament had been a point of focus for the president previously. During the U.S. team's round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Trump had asked Infantino to review a red card issued to USMNT forward Folarin Balogun. FIFA subsequently suspended the one-game ban, allowing the striker to play in the team's following match against Belgium, which resulted in a 4-1 loss and the elimination of the U.S. from the tournament.
