United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced deep concern regarding the intensifying military confrontation between the United States and Iran, specifically condemning recent strikes that have targeted civilian infrastructure. Deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq stated on Friday that the Secretary-General views these attacks as entirely unacceptable, emphasizing that the UN remains worried about the ongoing military escalation occurring both within Iran and across the broader region.
The UN's position follows a sixth consecutive night of US military operations in southern and southeastern Iran, which saw strikes against five bridges and various other locations. According to Iranian media reports, at least eight people have been killed, with several others sustaining injuries. The damage includes hits on Iranshahr Airport, which resulted in one injury and destruction of fuel tanks and electrical facilities. Additionally, a maritime control tower at the Shahid Kalantari Port in Chabahar collapsed following a third strike on that site.
Farhan Haq reiterated Guterres’ conviction that no military solution exists for the ongoing dispute between Washington and Tehran. The UN chief is calling for a surge in diplomatic efforts to reach a peaceful and durable settlement. He noted that any such agreement must include the full restoration of international navigational rights and freedoms in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
Regional tensions have been building since February, when a joint offensive by the US and Israel prompted retaliatory missile and drone strikes from Tehran against Gulf nations hosting US military assets. Although Iran and the US signed a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding last month aimed at establishing a lasting peace, recent days have seen a renewed escalation of hostilities centered on the Strait of Hormuz.
