Washington Freedom have booked their place in their third consecutive Major League Cricket final after a hard-fought seven-run victory over the San Francisco Unicorns in the second eliminator. The win sets up a championship clash against the Los Angeles Knight Riders, scheduled to take place in Oakland this Saturday.
In a high-scoring encounter that saw 469 runs produced across 40 overs, Washington Freedom posted a formidable total of 238 for 6 after being sent in to bat. The team's aggressive start was fueled by an 83-run opening partnership between Mitchell Owen, who scored 42 off 19 balls, and Steven Smith, who contributed 43 off 20. Although both openers fell within six balls of each other, Andries Gous maintained the momentum by smashing 73 off 40 balls, including eight fours and three sixes. Gous shared productive half-century stands with Rachin Ravindra and Nikhil Chaudhary, while Glenn Maxwell added 13 runs off 10 balls.
The San Francisco Unicorns nearly pulled off a massive chase, led by captain Matthew Short, who played a heroic unbeaten innings of 121 off 56 balls. Short, who struck 11 fours and eight sixes, single-handedly kept his side in contention despite the regular loss of partners. The Unicorns required 29 runs from the final two overs, but a tight 19th over from Saurabh Netravalkar, which yielded only seven runs, stalled their progress.
