Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza has shed light on the team's tactical decision to field eight batters in their ongoing three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. Following a 32-run victory in the opening match at Bulawayo, which gave Zimbabwe a 1-0 lead, Raza explained that the strategy is designed to encourage a more fearless brand of cricket.
Raza noted that the global standard of the game has evolved, and Zimbabwe must adapt to remain competitive. He expressed that while the team has historically performed as a 160-170 run side, they must now challenge themselves to consistently reach totals exceeding 200 to avoid falling behind the rest of the world. In the recent match, where 155 was considered par, Zimbabwe posted 171, a performance Raza believes validates the approach.
The captain emphasized that having eight batters provides the flexibility for players to be more aggressive once they are set. He wants his side to have the confidence to target specific overs—aiming for 15-run bursts—to stay ahead of the required rate. Furthermore, the selection allows Raza to better utilize the team's all-rounders, including Milton Shumba, Ryan Burl, Dion Myers, and Brian Bennett. By fielding these players, Raza aims to put them under pressure to perform with the ball, fostering greater accountability and self-belief within the squad.
Reflecting on the team's bowling performance, Raza praised his pacers, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, and Brad Evans. He highlighted Ngarava’s commitment despite ongoing fitness challenges and noted the effective partnership between the three bowlers. Raza was particularly pleased with the development of Brad Evans, who is working hard to establish himself as a genuine all-rounder, a role the captain believes is highly valued in international and franchise cricket. "And I can assure you, Inshallah, his graph is going to keep going up and up and he's going to keep getting better and better," he added.
Looking ahead, Raza remains grounded despite the series lead. He stressed the importance of focusing on the immediate task rather than looking too far into the future. He noted that there is still room for improvement within the team and expressed excitement for the upcoming matches, stating that the squad is focused solely on their preparation for Friday's encounter. "I, as a captain, and the boys upstairs are looking at Friday and after Friday we'll look at Sunday and then we see where we get to," he pointed out. "I've always said that when you start looking too far ahead you lose sight of what's right in front of you."
And credit to him, he is not still 100% fit but he does what he has to for the country and he puts his heart on the line for the country and he goes out and does what he does game in, game out.
Every time he has gone onto the park I know as a captain I'm going to get 100% from not just him but from everyone.
