Strasbourg has officially named 47-year-old Oliveira as their new head coach following the unexpected departure of his predecessor. The Englishman O'Neil, who had only joined the Ligue 1 side in January, left the club on June 26 to take up a position at Ipswich.
Oliveira joins the French side from the Portuguese top-flight club Famalicao, which served as his first role as a head coach. While the club did not disclose the duration of his contract, the new manager expressed his enthusiasm for the move. In a club statement, Oliveira described it as an honor to join the project, stating that he intends to bring emotion, create memories, and provide his best efforts to help the club continue its development.
Before his transition to management, Oliveira built the majority of his coaching career as a goalkeeping specialist. During that time, he worked with national teams such as Portugal and Premier League clubs including Everton and Fulham, where he served alongside Marco Silva. In December 2024, he took the helm at Famalicao, guiding the team to a fifth-place finish in the Primeira Liga last season—the club's highest standing since returning to the top flight six years ago.
The outgoing manager, O'Neil, left a significant mark during his brief tenure, leading the Alsace-based team to the Conference League semi-finals and an eighth-place finish in the domestic league table. Strasbourg is now preparing for the upcoming season, with their new Ligue 1 campaign scheduled to begin at Marseille on the weekend of August 21-23.
