Swedish Speaker Nominates Centre Party Leader for Prime Minister

Sweden’s parliamentary speaker, Andreas Norlén, has announced that Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist will be the next candidate to face a confirmation vote for prime minister. Norlén confirmed the decision during a press briefing held on Thursday, emphasizing the need to maintain momentum as the possibility of a snap election looms closer. According to the speaker, the move is intended to increase pressure on political parties to reach a viable governing solution.

This upcoming ballot, scheduled for next Tuesday, follows the rejection of Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson just two weeks ago. Thand Ringqvist recently reported to the speaker that she had been unable to secure sufficient support for a centrist coalition government led by Andersson. Despite this, she has agreed to be put forward as a candidate for a coalition consisting of the Centre Party, Social Democrats, Christian Democrats, Green Party, and the Liberals. Several of these parties have previously rejected this specific configuration.

Addressing the speaker's decision on X, Thand Ringqvist clarified her position, stating that her mandate was not originally about her own candidacy for prime minister. She noted that her team had viewed it as natural for the speaker to either propose Magdalena Andersson or grant Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson the mandate to explore government options instead. Norlén explained that the three-day delay in reaching his decision was due to the intricate political situation, which required multiple rounds of consultations.

If Thand Ringqvist fails to secure a majority in Tuesday's vote, which is considered likely, the speaker will have two remaining attempts to propose a candidate before a new election must be called. In the event of her defeat, Norlén stated that Ulf Kristersson will be tasked with attempting to form a government, with a one-week deadline to complete the process. It remains unclear if Kristersson will face a formal prime ministerial vote if he concludes his task, with Norlén remarking that he would likely consult with the red-green bloc before proceeding to a third vote if necessary.
