A devastating wildfire has claimed at least 12 lives in southern Spain, marking one of the country’s most lethal fire incidents. The tragedy unfolded in the Almeria region, where many of the victims were trapped while attempting to escape the encroaching flames either on foot or by vehicle.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the disaster. Sarah Morris reports from Madrid, where authorities say the fire may have started after a power cable fell onto the road and ignited dry vegetation, as firefighters continue to battle the blaze amid extreme heat.

Beyond the confirmed fatalities, officials have reported that 19 people are currently missing, prompting ongoing search and rescue efforts as the region struggles to contain the spreading fire.
