How the 1858 Great Stink Forced London to Modernize

During the summer of 1858, London experienced an extreme heat wave with temperatures consistently topping 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) for weeks. The lack of rainfall left the River Thames in a catastrophic state, functioning as an open sewer for a city whose population had doubled to 2.5 million between 1800 and 1850. The river became a toxic mixture of industrial waste, garbage, and human excrement, which, when exposed by low tide and baking heat, released a suffocating stench across the capital.

The impact on the city was profound. Scientific understanding of the era was dominated by the miasma theory, which held that disease was spread through poisonous air. However, physician John Snow had previously identified a link between cholera and contaminated water supplies, famously removing the handle from a Broad Street pump in Soho to stop an outbreak that killed 500 people. Despite his findings, most officials remained skeptical of his theories, and Snow passed away in June 1858, just as the Great Stink reached its climax.

The crisis eventually forced political action. The Palace of Westminster, situated directly on the Thames, became unbearable for lawmakers, who were forced to flee to the countryside. This direct experience pushed Parliament to finally approve funding for a modern infrastructure project, passing legislation within 18 days to allocate £3 million for a new sewer system.

Engineer Joseph Bazalgette was tasked with the monumental project. He designed nearly 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) of sewers to intercept waste before it reached the Thames, while also constructing protective embankments, riverside promenades, and massive pumping stations. The Abbey Mills Pumping Station, completed in 1868, became an architectural icon known as the Cathedral of Sewage. By 1875, the system was fully operational, built to accommodate a population of 4.5 million, effectively ending the cholera era in London.

Bazalgette’s Victorian infrastructure served as the backbone of London’s wastewater network for over 150 years. While modern usage has put significant pressure on these pipes, the system remained in place until the 2025 opening of the 25-kilometer Thames Tideway Tunnel, which was designed to further relieve the strain on the historic network and ensure the city never faces a repeat of the Great Stink.
