Spain's State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a special warning for "very heavy and persistent" showers and thunderstorms across the Levante region and parts of the Balearic Islands. This weather event, expected to unfold over the next 48 hours starting this Sunday, is driven by the DANA (isolated depression at high levels) system known as Adam, which is combining with a highly humid easterly flow.
The agency anticipates widespread rainfall affecting four provinces, specifically southern Valencia, Alicante, the Region of Murcia, and the Almería coastline. In the Balearic Islands, the impact is expected to be significant, particularly on the Pityusic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera, while Mallorca is also forecast to receive substantial rainfall totals.
While Aemet notes that pinpointing the exact locations for the highest rainfall is challenging, the agency has currently maintained red alerts along the southern Valencian coast and in the north of Alicante. Additionally, orange alerts are in effect for the Seville lowlands, Ronda, and the Sierra de Grazalema in the province of Cádiz.
According to the official statement, the most likely scenario projects that the southern coast of Valencia and the area around Cape La Nao will experience the highest accumulations. Forecasters expect rainfall to exceed 60-90 millimetres in one hour, with 12-hour totals potentially reaching 200-300 mm. Similar intensity is possible in the Pityusic Islands, where accumulations could surpass 160 mm in 12 hours.
Beginning late in the day, the storm is also expected to bring significant precipitation to the coastal and pre-coastal areas of Alicante, Murcia, and Almería, as well as across the Balearics toward Mallorca. In these areas, totals could exceed 50 mm in one hour and 100-140 mm in 12 hours, with the southern coast of Mallorca—including the capital, Palma—facing the most pronounced impact.
By late Monday, Aemet warns that the weather system could shift toward the north of the Valencia region and potentially reach Tarragona before finally losing strength as Tuesday approaches.
