German authorities launched an investigation on Sunday after a gaping hole was discovered in the perimeter fence surrounding Leipzig airport. The breach was first identified at approximately 11 p.m. on Saturday, according to information provided by the dpa news agency.

Police have indicated that preliminary evidence suggests a vehicle may have driven through the fence along a road that is publicly accessible. Emergency teams were dispatched to the scene to conduct a thorough search of the airport grounds, but they reported finding no sign of the vehicle or any intruders on the premises.

The incident at the airport comes during a period of heightened security concerns. The same facility was the site of an attempted attack in August, which involved a drone laden with explosives. While German authorities officially attributed that earlier incursion to Russia, Moscow has denied the allegation.

Officials stated that it is currently unclear whether there is any link between the discovery of the fence damage and the previous drone incident. Western officials have frequently accused Moscow of conducting a broader campaign of sabotage and disruption across Europe, utilizing methods such as drones to undermine support for Ukraine and destabilize nations in the region.
