Anthropic Pledges 5% of Shares to AI Benefit Fund

Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has announced plans to commit 5% of its shares to a newly created public benefit fund. This initiative is designed to support efforts that address the broader societal consequences of AI, specifically focusing on potential labor market disruptions—an area where the company has already pledged $200 million for research and mitigation.

The initial share commitment is subject to approval by stockholders. Furthermore, the company may allocate an additional 2% of shares at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in Anthropic's valuation above a set baseline. The fund is structured as a wholly owned limited liability company (LLC), which provides the flexibility to distribute resources through direct financial support for specific populations or donations to nonprofit organizations.

This move expands upon existing commitments within the company, including an employee donation program that involves approximately half of its workforce and a pledge by Anthropic’s co-founders to donate 80% of their own equity holdings. When combined with these prior pledges, roughly 20% of the company's shares are now dedicated to public benefit initiatives, with the potential for further increases tied to future valuation milestones.

The focus on labor markets comes as global companies continue to reduce their workforces after adopting AI technologies, often citing increased operational efficiencies. Research from the International Monetary Fund suggests that AI could impact approximately 40% of jobs globally, with that figure rising to 60% in advanced economies, according to Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Regarding the share pledge, Elon Musk, who leads rival company xAI, suggested on X that he recommended giving the shares directly to the public.
