Trump Insists Energy Ceasefire Holds Despite Fatal Kyiv Drone Strike

US President Donald Trump maintained on Monday that an energy ceasefire is currently in effect between Ukraine and Russia, despite reports from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Moscow has continued to strike energy infrastructure sites. Speaking to reporters as he departed the White House for Ohio, Trump defended his claim, stating, "Well, they agreed. Because I said, ‘You agree.’ That's why they agreed. Because I said they agree." When asked to address the ongoing Russian attacks, the president noted, "Well, I'd have to look at it and see, because there's been violations on both sides."

The situation on the ground remains violent. On Monday night, a Russian drone strike hit a 25-story residential building in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, resulting in the death of one woman and injuring at least five other people, according to the city's military administration. Earlier that same day, falling debris from Russian attacks ignited a fire at a private residential building in the same district, leaving at least two people injured in those daytime strikes.

Trump’s assertion follows a brief social media post he published on Sunday, which stated that the energy ceasefire took effect immediately and included the warning, "Do not break it!" In contrast, the Kremlin has remained non-committal regarding the existence of such a pact. When questioned on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to confirm whether Russia had agreed to the ceasefire, stating only that "contacts are ongoing."
