Sacha Baron Cohen is set to headline the West End premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s first stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, scheduled to open in London in March 2027. The production marks a significant milestone for the 63-year-old filmmaker, as it is the first work he has written for the stage and will also be directed by him.
Tarantino, celebrated for his iconic filmography including Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, expressed his excitement for the project, stating he is “keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out.” The play is described as a “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise” set in 1830s Europe, drawing inspiration from the swashbuckling epics of classic Hollywood, such as the works of Jesse Lasky Jr., Ernst Vajda, and George Bruce. Within the play's title, a “popinjay” is defined as a vain or conceited person, while a “cavalier” refers to a courteous gentleman or cavalryman.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Baron Cohen remarked: “Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first ‘motherfucker’. When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions. I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together. I have made him promise not to be gentle.”
The production is being produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Tom Rothman, chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, joined Friedman in praising the project. “It is a joy and an honour to be developing this play with Quentin – and obviously quite an adventure. How lucky we are that one of the great storytellers of our time has chosen to make his theatrical debut,” they stated. They further noted that observing Tarantino in a rehearsal room is an “extraordinary” experience, highlighting his “infectious” delight in working with actors, musicians, acrobats, and fencers. Regarding the lead actor, they added: “And now we have Sacha Baron Cohen at the heart of it all: a fearless, brilliantly inventive actor with the wit, mischief and daring this role demands.”
Tarantino, who has earned two Academy Awards, two Baftas, and four Golden Globes throughout his career, first shared his plans for the stage play in 2025 on the Church of Tarantino podcast, confirming at the time that it was “all written.” For Baron Cohen, 54, this role marks his first leading performance in a major stage production, though his background includes training with French clown expert Philippe Gaulier.
Full casting details for the production are expected to be announced at a later date. Ticket prices start at £25, with over 16,000 tickets available for under £50 throughout the run.
He went on to direct Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Volume 1 and Volume 2, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.
