A vehicle crashed into a crowd of people in Newcastle on Saturday morning, leaving several individuals injured. The incident occurred at approximately 9.30am on Newcastle Link Road at the Transfield Drive roundabout in Wallsend, as fans had gathered to bid farewell to the Knights team bus ahead of the NRL grand final.

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after the collision, where they began providing treatment to the injured. Police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene. As a result of the emergency response, authorities closed Newcastle Link Road in both directions, which necessitated a diversion of the planned Knights grand final procession.

The club issued a statement via Instagram confirming the change in their route. While expressing their apologies to fans who were unable to see the team off, the club emphasized that public safety remained their priority. Police have issued an appeal for supporters to leave the area, thanking the community for their patience and cooperation while requesting that roads be kept clear to allow for ongoing traffic management and emergency service operations.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns expressed his sympathy for those affected by the incident. He described it as a heartbreaking situation for fans who had gathered to celebrate their team. The Premier noted the significant role the grand final has played in uniting the Newcastle community and stated his hope that the city would remain united during the response to this event. The NSW ambulance service has also been contacted to provide further information on the situation.
