Counter Terrorism Policing has confirmed that two Iranian nationals have been charged with terrorism offences related to an alleged plot targeting the Jewish community in Manchester. The charges were announced as the city’s Jewish population observed Yom Kippur.

The two men, 35-year-old Rahman Salehi and 36-year-old Salam Ahmadyan, face accusations of preparing to commit an act of terrorism or assisting another individual in the commission of a terrorist act. These alleged offences are said to have occurred on or before 20 September.

Police apprehended the pair in the city's Northern Quarter. At the time of the arrests, thousands of British Jews were attending synagogues in the area. The suspects are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court this Saturday.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood addressed the case, stating that the charges would be "deeply distressing" to the Jewish community. She further noted that both individuals had arrived in the United Kingdom by small boat several years ago.
