Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Kyiv and Washington are seeking to bring the war in Ukraine to a close before the arrival of winter. This development follows what the Ukrainian leader characterized as a positive and productive meeting with his United States counterpart, Donald Trump.
The two leaders convened on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. According to Zelenskyy, the discussion centered on potential de-escalatory measures that could facilitate a path toward diplomacy. In a social media update, the Ukrainian president confirmed that both the United States and Ukraine share a mutual desire to see the end of what he described as a senseless Russian war before the winter season begins. Beyond the timeline for peace, the leaders addressed a winter air defense package for Ukraine and reviewed various other bilateral and multilateral matters.
Since the initiation of the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, Moscow has engaged in a persistent bombardment of Ukrainian cities and regions, with a specific focus on crippling the nation's energy infrastructure during the winter months. In a strategic effort to degrade the Kremlin’s economic capacity and its war machine, Ukraine has launched a deep strike campaign targeting the Russian energy sector. These operations have frequently hit oil refineries, terminals, and depots. Earlier on Tuesday, Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had successfully struck an oil refinery in Bashkortostan and another in the Samara region within the preceding 24 hours.
During a joint press appearance in New York, Trump commented on the Ukrainian strikes against Russian energy facilities. He acknowledged that the attacks represented a very serious hit to Russia, though he also noted they had caused a serious hit on the price of diesel. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump remarked that Russia had unfortunately lost control of its diesel oil industry due to the conflict, which he characterized as a ridiculous and never-ending war. He further noted that the world is suffering as 25,000 people, primarily soldiers, are killed each month.
In response to these developments, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is prepared to halt strikes on Russia’s energy industry provided that Moscow agrees to reciprocal action. He stated that Ukraine’s energy sector, critical infrastructure, and food exports must cease to be targets for Russia, adding that such a commitment would lead to matching de-escalation steps on the part of Ukraine, noting that solutions are possible.
